Advice: The Thoughtful Builder

Retrofit advice from people who do the work

Not sure where to start with your home? Whether it’s cold, damp, too hot in summer, or you simply want to make it more comfortable and cheaper to run, we can help you work out what’s going on and what to do next, in plain English.

The Thoughtful Builder is the advice side of Lambert Home Builds. It comes from years of hands-on retrofit work on older and traditional homes, and from Nikki’s own all-electric home retrofit, where we trial products and methods before we ever recommend them to anyone else.

What we can help with

  • Where to start: what to do first, what can wait, and what order the work should go in so one job doesn’t undo another.
  • Problem homes: cold rooms, condensation and mould, draughts, or overheating, and what is really causing them.
  • A second opinion: on a retrofit plan, a quote or a specification you’ve already been given.
  • Heating decisions: whether your home is ready for a heat pump, and what to improve first.
  • Measuring your home: where it’s useful, a SmartHTC heat-loss test to see how your home actually performs, rather than relying on estimates.
  • Choosing a builder: how to check any builder properly before you sign, using our free Build-Check checklist.

How it works

  1. Start with a free initial consultation. Call or email and tell us about your home and what’s bothering you. Often that conversation is enough to point you in the right direction.
  2. Go further if you need to. Depending on your circumstances, we may charge for survey work, investigations or diagnostic work, including SmartHTC testing. We’ll explain what’s involved and agree any cost with you before we start, so there are no surprises.
  3. The right help, even if it isn’t us. We work closely with other organisations, such as Build Test Solutions, and with a close network of trusted suppliers and architects. If someone else is better placed to help, we’ll point you to them.

Community groups and shows: we work with local community groups on a voluntary basis, and volunteer at a number of home building and renovation shows and at the NSBRC. If your group would like us to come along, get in touch.
